Final summer programs for teens wrapping up

Several free events are wrapping up the teen You Are Here: But Books Take You Anywhere series this week and next at Fauquier County libraries.

The final Game of the Month Club meetings are:

• 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, at the John Barton Payne Building
• 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, at the John Marshall Library

The final origami program of the summer is:

• 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, John Marshall Library

A book and game swap for teens is being hosted by all Fauquier libraries on Tuesday, Aug. 2. It is the final event in the teen You Are Here: But Books Take You Anywhere series.

Teens may bring a book and take a book, talk about latest favorite reads and play Wii and board games. Materials will be on hand to make beads or paper jewelry for those who are crafty, and Chick-Fil-A is adding to the festivities by donating chicken nuggets for all to enjoy. Check it out at:

• 6:30 p.m. at the John Marshall Library and the John Barton Payne Building

In addition to the free programs, teens can qualify for prize drawings by reading books and then doing short book reviews through Aug. 5. Selected book reviews are posted on the library’s Facebook. You don’t have to register to attend library events, but teens can help the library meet its collective reading goal by registering here or and at any Fauquier library. Last day to log books read is Friday, Aug. 12.

Story time change of pace

The library is presenting several special story times this month giving families some nice alternatives during busy summer schedules.

All Fauquier libraries are presenting a Saturday story time at 10:30 a.m. July 23: Bealeton, John Marshall and Warrenton (John Barton Payne Building). Terrific stories and fun songs are the order of the day.

Have you ever wanted to wear your pajamas and slippers to the library? Here’s your chance, and you can do a fun craft, too. Blankets and stuffed animal friends welcome. This program is suitable for all ages. Pajama story times are: 

• 7 p.m. Monday, July 25 @ the Bealeton Library and John Barton Payne Building
• 6:30 p.m.  Wednesday, July 27 @ the John Marshall Library

New Birthday Book Club great way to honor kids

Fauquier County Public Library is introducing a great new way for people to honor children's birthdays while benefitting many children for years to come.

The new program is called the Birthday Book Club. For a donation of $25 or more the library will purchase an appropriate book - based on the birthday child's age and interests - and place a special bookplate honoring the child in the book. Also, birthday greetings are mailed to the child and the donor receives an acknowledgement for their records.

Children take imaginary trip to Mexico, learn about butterflies

Jerry Schneider knows a lot about butterflies and he loves teaching children about them. Fortunately for Fauquier kids, Mr. Schneider will be in town on Monday as part of the public library's free Amazing Tales summer reading program.

 

On Monday, July 11, children will learn about the migration of monarch butterflies to and from Mexico, and about the Day of the Dead festivities and why butterflies are so important to this special holiday. This special event, Let's Go to Mexico!, is recommended for children entering K-5th grade this fall.

 

To add to the fun, kids attending this special event will do a cool butterfly craft. They should bring a white T-shirt for the butterfly craft, but for those who forget, T-shirts will be available for $4 at the program:

• 7 p.m. - John Barton Payne Building

Discount books: Presidents and politics

The Book Cellar is featuring discounts on presidents, presidential families and politics throughout the month of July. When you buy one book from this sale category you are entitled to a second title of equal or lesser value in that category for free.

Featured authors on sale under the same terms this month are: Howard Fast, Andrew Greeley, Tom Clancy and Lawrence Sanders.

Teens celebrate new Harry Potter movie

Students entering 6th grade or higher this fall are invited to celebrate the release of the final Harry Potter movie on Tuesday, July 12, at all Fauquier libraries.

Two libraries will screen Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1, in preparation for the July 15 release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. The program is free and so is the popcorn. No tickets are required. The Bealeton Library will show Part 1 at 4 p.m. July 12, and the John Marshall Library will show the movie and provide free popcorn at 6:30 p.m. July 12.

The Warrenton Library will host a release party from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on that same day, Friday, July 12, in the John Barton Payne Building. Games, contests and more are in the works. Costumes are welcome.
