Where would we be without our Friends?

The library's bookmobile, outfitted by the
Friends of the Fauquier Library, made its
rounds in the 1970s. This photo appeared
in the Fauquier Democrat on May 17, 1970.
In 1970, Friends of the Fauquier Library outfitted an old laundry truck with shelves stuffed with books from donors. The truck, the county’s first bookmobile, was warmly greeted by adults and children in far flung corners of the county. While the bookmobile no longer makes the rounds from Opal to Orlean, the library still depends on the Friends to help bridge the gap between what the library needs and what it can afford.
“I don’t know where we would be without the Friends,” says Library Director Maria Del Rosso. “They help sponsor hundreds of library programs each year that would not have been possible through funds normally available for library operations. I think most patrons would be surprised to learn how many of the services and programs they enjoy are supported by the Friends.”
This year, thanks to the Friends, Fauquier children and teens enjoyed robust summer reading programs and adults gathered together to discuss ideas, books and movies.  More than 1,880 children, teens, and adults participated in the summer programs by reading more than 42,0000 books, and attending more than 165 special events.
The Friends were also responsible for new tables, desks and chairs that brighten the John Marshall Library, and, because county funds for continuing education were scarce, the Friends sponsored library staff so that they could learn more about emerging e-books and other digital trends.
If you’re not a Friend, consider joining this vital organization. With your help, The Friends can continue the work begun more than 40 years ago — connecting county residents with the riches a public library offers.
And be sure to visit the Friends Book Cellar, especially during the October Madness sale this weekend.  Anyone joining the Friends or renewing their membership will receive a coupon for an attractive, heavy duty tote bag bearing the Friends logo redeemable at The Book Cellar or at any Fauquier library.
