Welcome fall with local flavors

Each October, food crafting company Wilton Enterprises celebrates National Bake and Decorate Month. There is no tastier way to welcome fall than with a celebration of the art of baking and decorating!

It comes at a perfect time. With Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas right around the corner, many of us will pull out our favorite family recipes to make. Like most, I have tried and true family recipes that I dust off for holiday baking. Fall just wouldn't taste the same without a pan of mom's special apple dumplings. No dessert buffet would be complete without grandma's raisin-filled cookies. And Thanksgiving dinner would be sadly lacking without pumpkin pie made with Aunt Dana's "perfect pie crust" recipe.

Many local cookbooks can be found
at the Fauquier County Public Library
Despite all the delicious recipes that are staples on our table, I find myself searching the internet, magazines and cookbooks for yet another recipe to serve. Without fail, however, I find some of the best recipes in local cookbooks - often produced by schools, churches or other civic organizations as fundraisers.

Introducing a new pie, tart or other dessert to your family is just a spatula and library card away! Many local cookbooks can be found at the Fauquier County Public Library. Click here to view a list of local cookbooks in our collection.

If you are looking for ways to introduce baking to your children, check out the latest installment of Kiddosphere, our blog for children, which featured children's books and ideas for National Bake and Decorate month!

Happy reading (and baking)!
