New programs for the new year

It's hard to believe, but a new year is right around the corner! 2013 has flown by - filled with book club meetings, scrabble and chess, Socrates Cafe, writing groups for teens and adults, the annual summer reading program and so much more.

As we look at the year ahead, we are pleased to announce that even more programs and events are being added to the program lineup - creating even more opportunities for patrons to learn, collaborate with their peers, and have fun.

Here is a snapshot of the expanded program schedule for 2014:
  • Thursday session added to the Bealeton Book Club - once a month just isn't enough! To enable more patrons to join, the Bealeton Book Club is expanding its meetings to include a 2:30 p.m. Thursday session (usually the third week of the month). The list of books being discussed is available here
  • A Saturday session of LEGO Club - one of our most popular programs for children-  is coming to all the Fauquier County Public Library locations on Saturdays, beginning January 4th at 11:00 a.m.
  • NEW Bealeton Adult Writing Group - based on the popularity of the Warrenton library's Adult Writing Group, a new adult writing group is being formed at the Bealeton Library. Meetings will be held at 3:30 p.m. on the 4th Wednesday of the month (with some exceptions based on holidays).
Just for the fun of it, take a peek at some of the great programs from 2013 - you can see photos here.

Other programs and special events will be announced soon! Watch our website and Facebook page for more details or contact us at (540) 422-8500 to learn more.

Happy Reading (and writing and building!),
Lisa @ the Fauquier County Public Library

Celebrate National Cookie Day with us!

December 4 is National Cookie Day.  Here's a little bit of  the history behind these delightful treats.

The English word "cookie" is derived from the Dutch word "koekje," which means little cake. Dutch bakers tested their oven temperatures on small amounts of batter so that they would not waste the entire cake mix if the temperature wasn't right. It didn't take long before bakers realized that these little pieces of cooked batter could satisfy the sweet tooth!

Cookies come in many different shapes, flavors and classifications including bar cookies, filled cookies, rolled cookies and sandwich cookies, to name only a few. Perhaps it is this wide variety - with a cookie to satisfy even the most discriminating sweet tooth - that attributes to the whopping 35,000 cookies that are consumed annually per person! I know I've certainly eaten my share!

About half of all home baked cookies are chocolate chip. Yummy! If you want to expand your cookie making skills, and are looking for a new recipe, check out one of the many cookbooks found in our collection.

We'll be celebrating National Cookie Day at all three Fauquier County Public Library locations during story times this week.  Here's the schedule:
Warrenton Library
Wednesday, Dec. 4 @ 10:30 a.m.
(during toddler story time)
Thursday, Dec. 5 @ 10:30 a.m.
(during pre-school story time)

Thursday, Dec. 5 @ 10:30 a.m.
